I've finally got round to updating my "books on the go" list in the right hand column of this blog. Each of them is linked to the amazon.co.uk site if you're interested in seeing more about them (and people's reviews of course). Perhaps I'll comment on one or two of them in the next few days...
In the meantime, reading of a slightly different type - regular Bible reading. Talking to a friend the other day, they mentioned reading through the whole Bible in a year (mostly in the bath, it sounded like!) and it reminded me both of a year I did that as a student (the problem being that when I missed a week of readings, it then took forever to catch up!) and of a link I'd bookmarked just a few days before.
The One Year Bible online gives a daily route through the entire Bible - with links to read the actual passages (in various translations) online if you want, or a printable list for the whole year otherwise. You don't have to start on January 1st - although there's no reason at all why you shouldn't start there and do an extra day every now and then 'til you catch up.
There's nothing quite like reading whole chunks of scripture rather than individual verses - stories take on a different shape in their context and the sweep of the Bible feels different read like this. Reading narrative alongside prophetic works, alongside the poetry of the Psalms and thought-provoking comments of Proverbs helps us appreciate the incredible variety of the Bible - and there'll be some surprises along the way for most of us as we read passages we didn't realise were in there!
Let me know if you decide to give it a go - perhaps we ought to plan now for 2007, that we'll try to get as many of All Souls as possible to commit to reading the Bible in a year? If you did it now, you could tell people it was worth it...
