Isn't Peterson a wonderful writer? Fresh, gracious, but deeply challenging.

I have to be honest: church and christians generally would come low down on almost everyone's list. That's the sometimes depressing reality. This is because churches tend to be little more than social groups where people with a common interest build their own Christian subculture, with its own set of rules and strange practices - the result is that when visitors pop in, they feel alienated and out of place, and there's precious little to satisfy their deep and genuine spiritual hunger.

Let's instead build the sort of place where people with spiritual itches would get scratched. Or should I say, let's participate with God in building a community of faith - because I'm sure if we allow God to build the church, his indwelling and often tangible presence will scratch a lot of itches! And I think one of the keys to seeing God's church being built is that we don't allow any unauthorised building (of merely human origin) - our own well intentioned good ideas can rapidly fill up the availabe space, leaving little room for God to move.
